Irradiance (mW/cm²)

Definition

Irradiance is the measure of optical power density delivered to a surface, expressed in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). It determines how much light energy reaches your tissue at a given distance.

What Is Irradiance?

Irradiance, measured in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²), is the amount of optical power delivered per unit area of a surface. In the context of red light therapy, it tells you how much light energy is actually reaching your skin at a specific distance from the device. It is one of the most important specifications to evaluate when choosing a red light therapy panel.

Think of irradiance like water pressure from a hose. The total amount of water (total optical power) matters, but what really determines effectiveness is how much water hits a specific area. A fire hose and a garden sprinkler might use the same total volume, but the concentrated pressure is vastly different.

Why Irradiance Matters in Red Light Therapy

Irradiance directly determines the fluence (energy dose) delivered during a treatment session. Fluence is calculated by multiplying irradiance by time: if a device delivers 100 mW/cm² and you treat for 10 minutes (600 seconds), you receive 60 J/cm² of energy.

Research on photobiomodulation has identified optimal dose ranges for different applications. Most clinical studies that show positive results use irradiance levels between 20 and 200 mW/cm². Below this range, insufficient energy reaches the target tissue. Above it, the biphasic dose response may lead to diminishing or even negative effects.

The Distance Factor

Irradiance decreases with distance from the light source according to the inverse square law. A device might measure 200 mW/cm² at the surface of the LEDs but only 80 mW/cm² at 6 inches and 30 mW/cm² at 12 inches. This is why reputable manufacturers specify the measurement distance alongside their irradiance claims.

When comparing devices, always check that irradiance is measured at the same distance. A device claiming 300 mW/cm² at 0 inches is not necessarily more powerful than one claiming 100 mW/cm² at 6 inches. The measurement distance changes everything.

How to Evaluate Irradiance Specifications

  • Check the measurement distance — Legitimate companies specify the distance at which irradiance was measured (e.g., "100 mW/cm² at 6 inches")
  • Look for third-party testing — Independent lab verification of irradiance claims adds credibility
  • Consider the treatment area — High irradiance over a small area may be less useful than moderate irradiance over a large panel
  • Beware of inflated numbers — Some companies measure at the LED surface or cherry-pick the highest reading from a single LED rather than averaging across the treatment area

A large panel with moderate irradiance may be more practical than a small device with high irradiance, because the large panel treats more area simultaneously. The ideal device delivers sufficient irradiance across a large treatment area at a comfortable distance.
