Circadian Rhythm

Definition

Circadian rhythm is the body's roughly 24-hour internal clock regulating sleep, hormones, and tissue repair.

Full Definition

Circadian rhythm is the body's roughly 24-hour timing system. It helps coordinate sleep and wake cycles, melatonin release, cortisol rhythm, temperature, digestion, immune activity, and repair processes across the day.

Why It Matters in Photobiomodulation

Light is one of the strongest environmental signals for circadian timing, but not all light has the same effect. Bright blue-enriched light in the evening can suppress melatonin and shift sleep timing. Red and near-infrared PBM wavelengths are discussed differently because they are usually used for mitochondrial signaling and tissue exposure rather than visual circadian entrainment.

That distinction does not mean every evening light session is automatically sleep-positive. Device brightness, eye exposure, session timing, and individual sensitivity still matter. The conservative Hale framing is that red/NIR routines may fit evening recovery habits for some users, while people with sleep disorders should manage total light exposure and follow medical guidance.

For practical use, circadian rhythm content should sit beside sleep hygiene rather than replace it. Hale can explain that evening red light routines may feel calmer than blue-white screen exposure, but users still need a dark bedroom, consistent sleep timing, and sensible eye exposure. This keeps the PBM discussion grounded in behavior, not just wavelength charts.

PubMed Reference

A systematic review on wavelength and human HPA-axis rhythms highlights that light wavelength can influence biological rhythms [Robertson-Dixon 2023, PMID:37895351]. A sleep-light device study in older adults examined nocturnal melatonin suppression at different exposure levels [Figueiro 2009, PMID:19444752]. These are light-rhythm references, not proof that PBM treats insomnia.

How This Matters at Hale

Hale's sleep content should separate circadian light hygiene from PBM mechanism. Users interested in recovery before bed can review sleep disorders content and choose an RLPRO panel based on body coverage, while keeping sessions comfortable and avoiding unnecessary direct eye exposure.
